How to work out your real profit on eBay
Start with the total the buyer pays — item price plus any postage you charge. eBay's final value fee is calculated on that whole figure, not just the item price, so free postage does not make the fee smaller; it simply moves the cost onto you.
Next subtract your real costs: what you paid for the item, the postage label, packaging, and anything else you spent getting it sold. What's left is your net profit. Divide that by the purchase price and you have ROI, which is the number that tells you whether the money was well spent.
Watch the break-even figure. If a listing drops below it after a price cut or a returned item, that sale costs you money. Knowing the number before you list keeps you from accepting offers you can't afford.
Frequently asked questions
How much does eBay take per sale in the UK?
For most private UK sellers eBay charges a final value fee of around 12.8% of the total amount the buyer pays, including postage, plus a fixed charge of about £0.30 per order. Rates vary by category and by whether you have a shop subscription, so the calculator lets you edit both figures.
Do eBay fees apply to postage?
Yes. The final value fee is charged on the full order total, so any postage the buyer pays is included. That is why the calculator has a separate 'postage charged' field.
What is a good profit margin when reselling on eBay?
Most resellers aim for at least 30% ROI on the purchase price after fees and postage. Lower margins can still work on fast-moving, high-value stock, but thin margins leave no room for returns or price drops.
How do I track eBay profit across lots of sales?
A calculator is fine for one item. Once you are selling regularly, log each purchase and sale in Profit Tracker and your profit, margin, ROI and stock value update automatically.
